Great with small branches; not with any > ~1 inch, I recommend, but know it’s limits

Great with small branches; not with any > ~1 inch, I recommend, but know it’s limits
Spent yesterday using this to chip up some dead branches removed from a Norway Spruce and some green branches from a small tree. I followed the instructions, nothing over 1.5 inches. I would recommend this, but make sure you understand its limitations. It’s more of a wood chipper than a shredder. The Good:Does a great job on small branches less than about an inch and twigs greater than ~1/4 inch.Relatively quiet when not chipping.I like the smaller chips it produces. I noticed the size depends a bit on the material used. Dry/dead branches tend to be a bit smaller than green branches.Easy to move around.Easy to assemble. Essentially you only have to put on the bar and wheels.Good safety features, but…..(see more below)The Annoying:It jammed a LOT once I started doing branches over about an inch. Once I had to actually remove some screws on the cover plate in order to remove the jam.The jams would not have been quite so annoying except for the carpal tunnel-causing lockdown bolt on the cover. The bolt is LONG and takes FOREVER to unscrew and rescrew. I guess this a safety feature as the machine with jolt around quite a bit when feeding larger branches. Seems like a there could be a better solution for this with some form of quick release snap down latch (I don’t know what they are called, but I’m thinking of the type you find to hold down the top of a shop vac as an example)Smaller twigs don’t really get chipped and you end up with 4-6 in twigs. Not great if you want to use the chips for mulching paths, etc. Some observations about what caused it to jam:-it seemed to do better with branches larger than 1 inch IF it was a long branch that tapered to a thinner section that I could hold onto and slowly feed the deep end first. I could then pull up if it started to jam.I had cut some bigger branches into 2 foot sections as I was originally planning to burn them. I eventually gave up on the branches larger than about an inch because they would almost always jam a small piece in between the blade and the metal cover over the branch. I did see some improvement when I used the paddle to keep the small pieces from bounding around by the blades. It doesn’t like knots or branch points on larger branches (and some smaller branches). It seemed to usually jam at these points on the branches. It did fine with these on thinner shrubby branches. It does better on dry/dead wood. Some other observations.I didn’t have a lot of green leaves on the branches, so I don’t have much to say about that other than it was hit or miss on the green leaves of my sugar maple branches.-I did feed it some garden clippings from a cat mint plant (long stems) and it actually did okay with those. I seems alternating between wet and dry materials can help avoid clogging it up, but I suspect it wouldn’t be very efficient for most garden clippings, so I’d stick to chipping branches.-I tried some very dry tall grass stalks and it did shred that up pretty well.-if you are looking for a leaf Mulcher, this is not the tool for you, unless you’re a little nuts and like tediously feeding a small handful into a 1.5 inch hole for hours.Images:First two images show the chips from essentially leafless, twigless branches (some dead, some green)Third image shows the result of shredding some of the ornamental tall grass stalks (top) and the I chipped twigs (bottom).Last image shows the pile of unchipped twigs that I pulled out of the pile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceed All My Expectations
Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2023
I've been researching an electric wood chipper for sometime. I'm not an arborist and don't need a monster machine to take down oaks and pecans. My top priorities were branches up to 1.5" from small fruit trees and hedges. My criteria was sufficient horsepower with low noise, safe but generous feed, safe chipping chamber access, blade replacement, and easy storage. That's not asking too much. Assembly was a breeze, no missing parts. My first task was my persimmon tree (as in golf club heads). Not exactly sure of persimmon on the Janka hardness scale, but it fed well with no laboring. It worked well on my fig tree and shrubs. I did notice that old seasoned wood from ancient shrubs, with the hardness of maple was accepted, but went through choppy, if fed slowly. Regarding the noise, its claimed to be in the 115 db range. I measured the sound while running with no load at 90 db (on concrete patio). I suspect that if set on grass or soil, it would muffle and moderate the noise. Design is great, sufficient room to place a large basket under the discharge. The paddle is a safe alternative to fingers in the feed. Only design objection was the goofy storage clip for the paddle placed down near the right wheel. As I don't have 'ape arms' the storage location was relocated on the handle using a piece of industrial grade 'hook and loop' material. The attached picture shows this placement. All together, I spent 3-4 hours on my first use. With occasional breaks to rest the motor, this chipper worked like a champ!
