Gardner Bender Household Tester Electrical Test Kit
This indispensable household tester kit includes the most commonly used testers to test Voltage, GFCI receptacles, batteries, and USB ports. The voltage tester allows the user to verify the presence of AC voltage prior to working on an electrical installation or during troubleshooting without requiring physical contact with live electrical conductors. The included GFCI receptacle tester detects common wiring problems in standard and GFCI protected outlets. Simply plug it in and view the light pattern on the tester to determine if it's correct, open ground, open neutral, open hot, hot/grd reverse, or hot/neu reverse. Tester works on 110-125 VAC receptacles only and will not indicate quality of ground. The battery tester tests common household battery types (AA, AAA, C, D, and 9V batteries) to determine existing charge. Finally, the USB tester can check USB ports for the presence of voltage and test for proper wiring and polarity. Simply plug it into a USB port and the indicator bulb will glow a certain color to tell you the condition of the USB port.

After both products arrived, I went around our house and found that all outlets on our GCFI circuit did indeed show an open ground. The GCFI outlet is in our master bathroom and protects two more bathrooms, in addition to the master bedroom, the patio outlet, and an outlet in our garage.
Since we were going to need to go through and check all of our 33 year old outlets and switches, we decided to change them all to updated Leviton® versions, especially the outlets to tamper-resistant (and from ivory to white), which we proceeded to complete, after shutting off that circuit and using the live wire tester from this set to confirm the circuit was off. But as we checked the dozen or so outlets and switches on the GCFI circuit, none of them had open/disconnected grounds, yet both outlet testers still showed we had an open ground when we flipped the circuit back on.
The only other option was likely an open ground in one of the electrical boxes in our attic that would be in the circuit 'before' the GCFI outlet, so I climbed up into the attic through my closet (BTW, I ordered a new Xtend and Climb® 760p+ 10.5' telescoping ladder for easier access to our attic and it works great! I did a review of that too).
The first electrical box I checked is right above my closet, right next to the access opening. I took off the cover to that electrical box and immediately noticed the ground wire to the switch for the light in my closet wasn't connected to the other ground wires coming in and going out of the box. It had been like this since our house was built in 1988 and we had no idea!
I took a picture with my phone and came down from the attic to show my husband. He asked me to turn the circuit off again and he grabbed the wire nuts and extra copper wire we already had in the house as we searched for the open ground and headed up to the attic. He pig-tailed the ground wire to include the light switch, closed up the box, and came back down from the attic.
As he went back outside to reset the circuit breaker, we were talking to each other on our phones, I plugged in the Gardner Bender® GK-5 outlet tester into the GCFI outlet in our bathroom.....TWO yellow lights! No more open ground, but just to make sure it was correct, I used the yellow Sperry® outlet tester in an outlet in another bathroom....TWO yellow lights!
I've since used the battery tester and USB tester included in this set and they both work great as well! In fact, the battery tester confirmed that some of the AA batteries we thought were dead, actually had some life still in them, so we didn't end up throwing away good batteries.
