Some small cons:
- The auto night mode does not activate when it actually should, especially if your video frame includes some brightly lit windows or doors. It thinks that there is enough light to remain inactive but it is confused by the window light and the majority of protected area is very dark. It can be switched on manually but who remembers to switch it back and forth. Some solutions if Blink developers read this: add option to enable night mode based on geolocation and night/day times, or do not decide based on a sensor but by analyzing a video frame and checking if the dark area exceeds a certain percentage. Etc.
- Sometimes even smoke or steam from a gas boiler is detected as "movement".
- When you activate Live View on a camera, you get a "Continue ?" prompt about every 30 seconds. I understand the rationale since the video feeds probably go through Blink's infrastructure, but it's annoying nonetheless. But to be honest, I rarely need to watch more than 30 seconds. One minute would be nicer though.
All in all, I am not really complaining. The system is very well integrated, easy to install and does its job properly.
Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2024
- so the good updated news is that I replaced the batteries in the camera that was having problems, and it’s been fine for a couple of weeks now. So it appears that for some reason one of my three cameras just burned through batteries really quickly. Or maybe it was even a defective couple of batteries. I just didn’t want to change them out because they’re expensive lithium batteries and the problem started shortly after I bought them.
- OK that’s the end of my update. Everything‘s working great for now. Here’s my original review:
The price is reasonable. Even the subscription, which may be a little overpriced, is I guess fair.
Setting things up and using it is pretty simple.
If I weren’t having a technical issue, I’d probably be saying five stars, totally great.
The problem is, I’ve had three cameras in my system that I bought back in December. Two of those cameras have been working perfectly since the day I set them up. One of the cameras goes off-line regularly. So I take it down, pop out the batteries, put them back in, and then it works (this is what technical support recommends for resetting it). It works maybe for couple days, maybe for a week or two until it goes off-line again.
I first reached out with this problem to Blink support in January, and they basically said well appears to be working, so reach out if it continues to be a problem. Well now here we are the end of March and I’m still having a problem, so I reached out to Blink. Of course, it’s the same thing: reset it, and also give us the ability to look at the logs over the Internet what’s going on. Come back and tell me that it appears to be a Wi-Fi issue, so reset your Wi-Fi, and reset your camera. I explain to them that the other two cameras have never gone out, and this camera that’s going out happens to be the closest one to the sync module and the Wi-Fi. But resetting the camera works.
So then their response was “OK I’m glad it’s working. Please tell us if you have another problem. We are closing the case”
I said, I know it works when I take out the batteries and put them back in. My concern is that this camera keeps going off-line regularly. There seems to be something wrong with it.
So then the response was, “please reach out to Blink support for further assistance. They gave me a phone number and an email.
The email was the address that I was already communicating with! They gave me an email address that was the email the email was from. So there might be a communication disconnect here. But all I know is that no one is taking care of the fact that I seem to have a defective camera.
Great concept, great price point, but sadly the software (and maybe the hardware) is buggy. The Synch module goes offline intermittently requiring a reboot to come back on line. There is also an apparently known issue with live view recording despite the settings. It just does not record, or not, per the settings. I am a networking expert and will say support is nice and available, but not technical. Their explanations include "move the synch module to within 6 feet but not too close to the router". That is simply technically illogical, but I did try it anyway (by the way blink would be communicating with an access point", not a "router" - my support guy didn't understand the difference). They said Mesh networks (which I run) have issues, so I went and setup a completely different dedicated non mesh WIFI network just for Blink - Mesh was and is not the issue in my opinion. (I run commercial grade AP's and router with a solid fast Cable Internet link at home, because that's what I do) I went ahead and installed a smart plug to reboot the thing so I can restart it without having to physically unplug it and plug it back in. There is no ability to reboot any of the components without either unplugging (synch) or pulling the batteries out (cameras - which is obviously inconvenient and ridicules). I'm hoping the issues get resolved or I'll probably end up installing more "real (7x24 recording)" IP cameras. NVR's are available (no subscription - I run one) but the cameras are comparably expensive compared to Blink and Blink's ability to run off batteries is very cool making installation (and repositioning) a breeze. In summary, guys, please make the product work as advertised and it would be a 10 for the application and purpose.
